Lyle Tuttle is an icon in the tattoo community.  He’s now 81 but he continues to do the convention circuit and teaches a class in machine building and machine maintenance.

He got his first tattoo when he was only 14!  He began his career after WW II and he eventually became well known with celebrities.  He’s tattooed Cher, Janis Joplin, and Henry Fonda during the course of his career.

He retired in 1990 but will still tattoo his signature on a friend or acquaintance

Tuttle was ahead of his peers in for-seeing the importance of a regulated industry.  He worked with local officials to keep a friendly relationship. He was an important part of establishing health regulations in San Francisco studios before it caught on in other states.

You might say he pioneered the concept of regulating tattoo shops and keeping them clean and using sterilization.

Unfortunately, some of his forward thinking earned him a bad rep with other artists at the time.  Bringing tattooing to the attention of the mainstream was not looked on favorably and some considered him as a turncoat.  I give him credit for ignoring his critics and doing a good thing.

I love this picture of him with this oversized tattoo machine….
