Kate Hellenbrand is one of the pioneers of female tattoo artists. She began her tattoo career over 35 years ago in 1970. Her career began in New York City where tattooing was illeagal at the time. Also known as Shanghi Kate, she is a well respected elder in the tattoo community. Some of her more famous clients include one of my favorites – Howards Stern, Summer Phoenix, and the lead guitarist of Pearl Jam. Kate says she treats all her clients the same – the famous ones are treated exactly as her not so famous clients. Although she has seen many changes in the tattoo community, she said the biggest change has been the popularity of tattoos by mainstream people.
