Some weeks it’s hard to find new and fresh topics to blog about – I think of it as Blogger’s block and then there are the weeks where you find a gem like this and you can’t wait to get that post written. This is one of those types. The talented young team working at Julian Murray Photography and Design from Las Vegas has some offbeat projects. (Tattoos & Tentacles from Julian Murray on Vimeo.) They work in primarily the music, advertising, and fashion industries. One of the projects they’ve been working on this past year and plan to continue expanding upon is called the Tattoos and Tentacles Series. Check out the video – gives you an idea of the photo shoots. It features heavily tattooed people posing with a sea creature with tentacles. It looks like an octopus. A fairly small one but gives me the creeps to think about them those rubbery suction cups clinging to skin. Many of the photos are of beautiful. There are many with barely clad sexy women with the tentacle arms draped strategically to keep a person from seeing quite everything. You just wonder how they can stand it. And the models probably have to work with this creature for quite some time before getting the shot the photographer is looking for. Ughhh….The photos are cool and books and posters will be coming this year. The series will be part of future tattoo conventions and gallery showing. You may have an opportunity to see them in person.

Surgery in the Tattoo Shop

You know, I’m a firm believer that people should be tested before allowed to make decisions for themselves of others – like completely inept parents that are responsible for their little munchkins. Parents should be given IQ tests before allowed. And here we have an example of a Canadian tattoo shop employee using bad judgment with a customer, with even more bad judgment, requested minor surgery rather than a killer tattoo. Would you really ask your tattooist to perform genital surgery? Well someone asked for labia reduction. What is a labia reduction you ask – It is for women who have a problem with large labia, asymmetric labia or related female genital issues. A labia reduction reduces their outward appearance and corrects irregularities and is at times referred to as designer Vaginas. How did this come to the attention of the authorities? To make matters worse, the whole procedure was video taped and someone decided to unanimously mail it to the local cops. The police are actively investigating the incident and expect to lay charges soon. Although the video doesn’t capture the faces of the suspects, it does show their hands and arms. The hands and arms are covered in many very distinctive tattoos that will help the police.

The penalty for a first offense could include a maximum $25,000 fine or a maximum of one year in jail or both. I say lock them all up for stupidity.

Marine Policy on Marine Tattoo Policy

The Marines are looking for a few good men – minus the tattoos. Not only has this military branch laid out strict guidelines for interested future marines and soldiers currently serving, they also feel their guidelines will help with any future career plans a marine might pursue once he’s out of the marines. Their view is excessive tattoos detract from the professional appearance that people expect of a Marine. Although the Marines have had a fairly strict policy in place, Sgt. Maj. Carlton W. Kent stated that they realized more guidance was necessary to clear up questions about the existing policy. Sounds a bit bureaucratic. The policies are not only for their current employment in the Marines but also to help mold them for any future career they may strive for in the Marines or once they leave the service. To the Marine’s credit they seem to be looking out for the good of the enlisted men but I think they are placing too much emphasis on appearance and are showing an antiquated opinion on tattoos in general. At a time when tattoos are crossing mainstream and being appreciated as an art form, the Marines Corp is advising young men that tattoos will impact future careers in a negative way. Some of their policies I “get” – It prohibits sexist, racist, eccentric, vulgar or otherwise offensive tattoos. I really wouldn’t want to have racist assholes in our military or any government position. But once again I think the military is showing it’s outdated and remains out of touch with young adults.

Some highlights of the policy: The latest and greatest Marine policy prohibits tattoos on the head, neck, hands, fingers and wrists. It also prohibits full, half and quarter sleeves visible in the standard physical training uniform.
Marines with grandfathered sleeves have no restrictions for reenlistment or promotion. However, they are no longer eligible for any enlisted-to-officer program, recruiting duty or Marine Security Guard duty.

Hair ‘N Tattoos

Maybe it’s the squeeze everyone is feeling these days, but I’ve just read about a second example of two small businesses combing into one business establishment. I admit – the first was in a book I was reading. The union brought on by friendship and a need for a job by all three friends. One third of an old house a book store, one third an art gallery, and one third a retro beauty shop. Then I read a similar story but it’s non-fiction and it was a marriage of a beauty shop and a tattoo parlor located in Brooklyn called Glamour Garage. The person responsible is Rebecca Faye the owner of Hello Beautiful Hair Salon. She loves tattoos and sports quite a few in addition to her sexy staff. Visit her site and show support for her business if you live in the Brooklyn area.

Rebecca feels the two worlds are similar – each is used as a way to sport your individuality. Letting your freak flag fly if you will. Outstanding idea. I would guess that people that may have been hesitating before making the big move to WALK into a real tattoo parlor will find this type of transition easier.

Females with Tattoo Sleeves

Jeff Gogue is a well respected self taught tattoo artist. His influences include Robert Hernandez, Nikko Hurtado, Shige, Bob Tyrrell, and well known tattoo legend, Joe Capobianco. He also dabbles in oil painting. He states that his goal is to tattoo creative, dynamic, refined work. Although this is a sleeve in progress I was impressed with the colors and the coloring. You can see that this is going to be a beautiful piece even in this stage. I think it oozes a feminine feel. Except for the knuckles with that skimpy looking font on the knuckles. Maybe extend that sleeve right down to do a cover up of that area. With the acceptance of tattoos, we are also seeing a growing popularity of women willing to get good sized pieces of work versus the dainty little tat on their rears.

Kat Von D Tattoo Concealer

Kat Von D recently came out with a new product in her family of makeup products with Sephora. This one is a concealer that will cover up your tattoos. Job hunting and tattoos are not always the best mix, so this product is a perfect choice for visible tattoos that are difficult to cover up with clothing. I would love for anyone who has used this product to comment to this post.
It’s fairly new and was recently demonstrated one her show by Kat and people I know that watched it said it was pretty amazing. They said you couldn’t tell that Kat had any tattoos at all. But here you have a version viewed on TV so it’s hard to say if the product is that good. Another high profile entertainer, Amy Winehouse, also promotes her line of cosmetics.

Mummys and Tattoos

I knew that tattoos go a long way back in different cultures but this was news to me. A couple of years ago, a Peruvian 1500 year old mummy of a heavily tattooed young woman was discovered inside a mud-brick pyramid. Visit the National Geographic page to read the entire story.

I love the antique flavor this photograph has. The artist uses digital means – Photoshop to be exact to work with antique photos. He has nice composition and coloring technique. Retains the vintage look but is giving more than the more standard more drab colors of old photography.
