Jace Masula is still in the early years of his tattoo career. His professional life began as a software developer and graphic designer. He eventually got the calling to express his artistic and creative side by learning how to tattoo. He semi-forced his way into an apprenticeship and finished in eight months but his tattoo journey now began at the age of 31! But this lapse of years, this late start, did not slow his talent down in the least. Looking at his tattoo portfolio, you would think you are eyeing the work of a long term professional. He is currently working out one of the more famous tattoo shops in Atlanta. He keeps company with Brandon Bond at All of Nothing Tattoo. He says he loves to do color as much as he loves doing black and gray. Jace was recently featured in International Tattoo Magazine. Great artist.

Pioneer for the Tattoo Cause

There always have to be the pioneers, the ones that are willing to fight for what they believe and Johnny Anderson falls into that category. Rather than just accepting Hermosa Beach’s zoning laws which ban tattoo parlors, Anderson is taking his fight to federal court claiming suppression of his right to artistic expression through his body art. Custom-designed tattoos account for about 95% of his business
Johnny currently owns a well established parlor call Yer Cheat’n Heart located in Gardena but is not happy with the neighborhood and wanted to move the business. After losing his court battle in 2008, he decided to appeal the ruling, and some law scholars are anticipating a different verdict this time. Anderson puts the blame on his failure in court the first time on the misconception that people visiting tattoo parlors are unsavory characters. Although Hermosa Beach doesn’t specifically ban tattooing, their zoning laws don’t recognize it as a permissible use. This man is not only fighting for a more desirable location but he’s helping other shop owners argue their point and possibly opening doors for them down the road. He’s putting years into the fight and is putting up his money where his mouth is. The guy deserves a lot of credit for his fight.

Hair ‘N Tattoos

Maybe it’s the squeeze everyone is feeling these days, but I’ve just read about a second example of two small businesses combing into one business establishment. I admit – the first was in a book I was reading. The union brought on by friendship and a need for a job by all three friends. One third of an old house a book store, one third an art gallery, and one third a retro beauty shop. Then I read a similar story but it’s non-fiction and it was a marriage of a beauty shop and a tattoo parlor located in Brooklyn called Glamour Garage. The person responsible is Rebecca Faye the owner of Hello Beautiful Hair Salon. She loves tattoos and sports quite a few in addition to her sexy staff. Visit her site and show support for her business if you live in the Brooklyn area.

Rebecca feels the two worlds are similar – each is used as a way to sport your individuality. Letting your freak flag fly if you will. Outstanding idea. I would guess that people that may have been hesitating before making the big move to WALK into a real tattoo parlor will find this type of transition easier.

Tattoo Sting

In my great state of New Mexico, ATF agents posed as artists at a tattoo shop (along with an actual tattoo artist) to conduct a 9 month operation targeting such crimes as drugs and firearms. Patrons were given other options to pay for the tattoos besides cash. The agents also bought meth, cocaine, weed and weapons. They called the sting operation – creative and successful. Considering the crime rate we have here in Albuquerque, this was a good idea.

One of the best parts of running a site that is open to suggestions, is the interesting and talented people that contact me. I get email from people all over the world. Which is how I learned about Rob Koss who sent me some of his work. He is one of 3 talented artists that work at XXX Tattoo – the other artists, Soeren Sangkuhl, Werner Businger. Horror Tattoos

This is a great example of a horror tattoo. Just enough color to give it the 3D effect but using more of the shading variations for most of the work.This piece is from a UK shop and although they do not give credit to the particular tattoo artist that did this piece my guess is Roy Priestley. Beautiful Tattooed Women

This photo is supposed to be the tattooed ladies of the Sacred Rose Tattoo shop in San Francisco. It almost looks like a touched up photo. I found it on a Google images search but not on their site. It’s a tattoo shop located in Berkley CA. Sacred Rose is the home of award winning tattoo artists, many of them have professional art degrees and formal training in the fine arts.

I love that phrase. It’s the description used by Mario Barth to describe his ideas for the future of his tattoo business. He is a famous artist who has revolutionized the business. Barth has his own line of inks, a 1.5 year waiting list and charges minimum of $1500. His goal – shops in every major world city–Tokyo, Beijing, Milan, Barcelona, Berlin, Los Angeles, and more. They’ll boast world-class artists–many of whom now travel to Barth’s New Jersey locations as guests–and they’ll be run by the people Barth has spent the past few years training.
