Kelly Grows Up

Although I’m not into most reality TV shows, The Osbournes was one that I looked forward to every week. Watching Ozzy shuffling and mumbling though family life with Sharon and the kids every week was my idea of entertainment. His kids kept the show interesting and I can still recall when Kelly divulged her first tattoo to her parents.

Well, now Kelly has grown up and has transformed into a “sophisticated” adult who is now planning on removing all of her 15 tattoos. Tattoo removal cost is high no matter what method you choose but lasering off 15 tattoos would probably carry the price tag of a new car.

Kelly is now twenty five years old (and would you even recognize her from this photo)? Talk about a makeover. She recently lost 50 pounds, has appeared on dancing with the stars, and is getting some acting roles.

She say she still likes some of them – including a matching tattoo she got with sibling, Jack, but has regrets about others. None the less, they’re all getting the ax.

Dreamt Up Tattoos

You may not have known his name but you’ll know the face. Liev Schreiber has starred in many roles in television and movies. One of his most recent and more popular roles was as Sabertooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. His background is very unusual. Once his parents divorced when he was 5 years old, him and his mom moved to New York City. She drove cab to support them but they lived in abandoned buildings. She never let him see color movies. Only the old black and white flicks. Anyway, he wasn’t into tattoos until recently when he had a vivid dream about a specific tattoo design. He dreamt he was in his senior years and his children were grown. He was driving and got a flat. While changing the flat, his sleeve rolls up and there is a tattoo of his childrens names on his arm. His kids were there and saw it and were thrilled. When he woke he thought it would be a great idea to show his love for them. He has experienced vivid dreams before that have been forceful enough to motivate him to act in his real life. He took up scuba diving to mimic the repeated dream he had of being able to fly. He felt that was fairly close to the wonderful sensation he experienced while having the dream.

I see a bright future for this artist. I have a couple imaging programs but find them so damn hard to learn. When I see someone accomplishing this level my mouth just hangs open. I can appreciate the work involved. Check out this video for a babysitting ad done by an art school student.

Tattoos and Tentacles

Some weeks it’s hard to find new and fresh topics to blog about – I think of it as Blogger’s block and then there are the weeks where you find a gem like this and you can’t wait to get that post written. This is one of those types. The talented young team working at Julian Murray Photography and Design from Las Vegas has some offbeat projects. (Tattoos & Tentacles from Julian Murray on Vimeo.) They work in primarily the music, advertising, and fashion industries. One of the projects they’ve been working on this past year and plan to continue expanding upon is called the Tattoos and Tentacles Series. Check out the video – gives you an idea of the photo shoots. It features heavily tattooed people posing with a sea creature with tentacles. It looks like an octopus. A fairly small one but gives me the creeps to think about them those rubbery suction cups clinging to skin. Many of the photos are of beautiful. There are many with barely clad sexy women with the tentacle arms draped strategically to keep a person from seeing quite everything. You just wonder how they can stand it. And the models probably have to work with this creature for quite some time before getting the shot the photographer is looking for. Ughhh….The photos are cool and books and posters will be coming this year. The series will be part of future tattoo conventions and gallery showing. You may have an opportunity to see them in person.

Jace Masula Talented Artist

Jace Masula is still in the early years of his tattoo career. His professional life began as a software developer and graphic designer. He eventually got the calling to express his artistic and creative side by learning how to tattoo. He semi-forced his way into an apprenticeship and finished in eight months but his tattoo journey now began at the age of 31! But this lapse of years, this late start, did not slow his talent down in the least. Looking at his tattoo portfolio, you would think you are eyeing the work of a long term professional. He is currently working out one of the more famous tattoo shops in Atlanta. He keeps company with Brandon Bond at All of Nothing Tattoo. He says he loves to do color as much as he loves doing black and gray. Jace was recently featured in International Tattoo Magazine. Great artist.

Ink Not Mink

I recently became a member of PETA. I felt I had to do more than yap about animal abuse and how much it upset me. They make some amazing strides in keeping businesses and people accountable for how animals are treated. But the task seems gigantic so any help individuals can offer helps the cause. Recently, PETA has had impressive campaigns to promote the ethical treatment of animals including “Ink No Mink”. Celebrities are stripping out of their clothes and being tastefully photographed with a couple of accessories and in all their tattoo glory. A great idea for a campaign. A win win. Everyone loves tattoos and celebrities. Naked celebrities with tattoos. Whoever thought up the campaign should get a promotion! Visit their ad page to see more. And if you have a heart, make a donation or, better yet, join PETA and support their work. If you can’t afford to do that, write a letter. Voice your objection to some of the cruelty we subject animals to.

David Bollt Artist

I’ve been aware of this artist for some years and have admired his style and talent. I did a small post about him almost 2 years ago that was lacking “meat” and decided David needed more credit than I gave him in that post. Bollt is not only a respected tattoo artist, he has a large following of admirers of his fantasy work and is well known for his illustrative work for book covers, CD covers and magazine art work. When he was only in his early teens, he began his art career by freelancing. He designed cover work for local bands as well as science fiction magazines. After getting his Fine Arts degree and working in the field for awhile, he spent a year studying tattooing. He travels the tattoo convention circuit and you might be able to catch him with his traveling art gallery which hits about 20 cities a year. His site is going under a redesign which will hopefully better show examples of his work. What I’ve seen of his tattoo work I like very much but I think his strengths are in his illustrations. If you admire his work and style and you are looking for a fantasy piece for your next tattoo, a copy of one of his art pieces might be the perfect choice.

“Mom” Tattoos – Trust me she would have preferred a Gift Certificate to the Cracker Barrel.
Cartoon Characters –Someday that stretched-out, mutated Tweetie Bird will ruin Loony Toons for your kid.
Naked People – I don’t care how artsy you think you are…it’s porn.
Tramp Stamps – Whether it’s a butterfly, a Rose or a bulls-eye a lower back tattoo says “I really ought to pull up my pants in public”
Side of the Neck Tattoos- You may have been man enough to handle the pain, are you man enough to handle the “douche bag” stereotype?
Chinese/Japanese Symbols How much do you trust your tattoo artist’s linguistic skills? The tattoo you THINK says “Strength” probably actually means “Cabbage”.
Belly Button Tattoos – skin elasticity fades away with time…but that ink won’t. A tight ring of flowers will be a hula hoop after baby #1
A Lover’s Name – A bad break up can leave you wishing they’d left you with herpes instead.
Boob Tattoos – sooner or later those things are gonna shrivel like raisins… and so’s your artwork.
Butterflies- of all the possible things to permanently mark yourself with, you choose a bug. You know those things were worms before they got wings right?
Portraits- If you’re gonna do a portrait choose some one fat and wrinkled. That’s the only way it will still look normal when you get fat and wrinkled.
Those tattoos that make it look like you’re a robot underneath your skin- No one thinks you’re a robot. They think you’re a geek for wanting to be a robot…
Prison Tats- Because your criminal record doesn’t make it hard enough to get a job. Nothing says “Don’t Hire Me” like your “Cellies 4 life” tattoo.
Gang Symbols for Gangs you aren’t in. – Dude, not only are you begging to get shot, you are more are less resigning yourself to a life lowering fries into hot grease.
Racist Tattoos – Just in case this isn’t self explanatory… at some point someone bigger than you WILL be offended and WILL kick your ass.

Self- Portraits – A physical incarnation of your super-sized ego hooray!
A Sleeve Tattoo of a Sleeve – Seriously man, just buy a freaking shirt.
Video Game Characters – A great way to broadcast to women that you are single and most likely live with your mother.
Biker Tats-As if your handlebar mustache didn’t say it all…
Hot Chicks- setting unrealistic goals for yourself since 1960.
Drugs/alcohol tattoos- A great way to tell the world you have an addiction problem. I guess somebody DID want to be a junkie when they grew up.
Your Own Name- is that in case you forget it? Check your underwear, your mom probably wrote it in for you.
Pirate Tattoos – yo, ho ho and a barrel of Dumbass
Genital Tattoos – Why do you hate yourself? Save your money and invest in therapy.
Skull and Cross Bones – I had my doubts, but that tattoo clearly states that you are in fact a bad-ass…or a hazardous substance…I’m not sure which.

Clown Tattoos

When you think of clown tattoos your mind usually visualizes the evil clown figure – demon like features, possibly fangs. At least that’s where my mind travels. Clowns are an extremely popular choice for tattoo body art. This tattoo brings back memories for me – my Mom collected clowns. Not evil scary ones, but more of the Emmett Kelly type like this image with it’s sad and forlorn feel. Another variation of the clown tattoo is the character of the Jester which is reminiscent of Medieval times when they were highly favored by royalty.
