I just learned of a nautical tattoo meaning that came as news to me.  It’s based on similar superstitions associated with nautical stars and mermaids.  There are usually multiple meanings associated with nautical images. Some begin with a superstition and evolve from there into what it means to people today.

So we all know how common and popular anchors, nautical stars, and mermaid tattoo work is, but are you familiar with the rooster and pig nautical tattoo?  I’ve never seen one and I wasn’t familiar with this nautical(?) tattoo or it’s meaning. The superstition is that the sailors knew that these two farm animals really hated the water. So, if they happen to find themselves overboard and in danger, their feet (as long as their feet were tattooed with these animals) would help them to reach safety quickly and get their asses to shore without harm. I thought it funny that sailors would have picked two farm animals to tattoo on their feet.  Why not a couple of sea mammals that would swim them to safety?

This piece was done by a talented guy by the name of Eric Wigger who works at the Devil’s Rose Tattoo in New York. Usually you see fairly small, dainty tats in this area. I believe one of the reasons is – the freaking pain. I’ve got one a tattoo on the top of my foot and the skin is so thin, with just bones lying beneath. Not a lot of muscle in this area. I don’t know if this was done in one sitting but I give them credit. Had to hurt in a big way. Other foot related tattoos – Moms and Dads getting their baby’s footprint as a tattoo.  Cute idea.  Often these are framed with the child’s birth date.
