Barbie with Serious Tattoos

We’ve seen Barbie go through quite a few transitions and lifestyle changes over the years. I barely recognize the doll I played with decades ago. Mattel made a smart move when they decided it was time that Barbie visited the local tattoo parlor.

This Barbie is different from the body art version that came out with removable tattoo stickers a few years ago. That Barbie was called Totally Stylin’ Tattoos Barbie. This new, more punk version of Barbie, has permanent tattoos and is called “tokidoki Barbie”. It was designed by Simone Legno and has a sleeve on her left arm and body art on her chest. Mattel describes this new Barbie as a “funky fashionista,” She comes with pink hair and a skull on her cute sweater to go along with her tattoos. She also wears a little hot pink mini-skirt with leopard leggings.

I don’t see anything about this doll that could negatively influence kids but I guess some people have to look for potential “evil” in everything.

The doll will not be sold and marketed in toy stores for little kids. It’ll be marketed for the Barbie Collector website that Mattel has. The reason is – they fear that conservative parents will have a shit fit if their kids found this doll cute and fun to play with. Heaven forbid! Little Mary might run out and get a skull tattoo on her chest when she’s eighteen because she played with Funky Barbie when she was six. Oh, my!

Dead Dolls

I wrote a post about this artist almost 2 years ago. Since then she’s expanded her gothic selection and her current inventory looks completely new to me – so I just wanted to throw her some traffic for her latest creations. I really think hand crafted goth dolls are not appreciated as they should be. Each one is unique and one of a kind. A collector’s item for people that have an affection for vampires and scary movies.

Internationally known artist, D.L. Marian, creates one of a kind dead dolls, mannequins and other works of art. I like that she offers to add fangs on request. She also offers tours of her studio which would be so interesting. She’s located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. I love a cool site like this.

Goth Dolls

Love the gothic dolls. These are so cheap, I actually think I could start a collection! They are classified as action figures on this site. The site is called bleeding edge Many of the collectible series are sold out but some are still available. They each have their personality listed and the prices on these are also unbelievably good – $35.00 or so. Even if you don’t plan on buying any visit. their site Have fun.

Gothic Lolita Fashion

I have a thing for dolls but this wasn’t quite where my searching would end up. This is Alli Jiang – who is the live model and also the digital enhancing for a series of photos where she poses in a doll like manner with “joints” drawn in to give the feeling of a real doll. You’ll be able to view the whole series which is creepy and cool at the same time and from there you can link to other series of photos this young artist has done.

Tattoo Baby Doll Project

Since I found dolls with tattoos, I’ve got a new interest – this site”The Tattoo Baby Doll Project serves to break down barriers and prejudices about women’s work and roles, tattoo subculture, craft and art.” The artist sends cloth bodied dolls to tattoo artists who then draw original tattoos directly on the dolls. After being returned, the artist hand embroider the images on the cloth bodies. The dolls, like their artists, are of different races, religious and sexual orientations, and cultural backgrounds.
