Some weeks it’s hard to find new and fresh topics to blog about – I think of it as Blogger’s block and then there are the weeks where you find a gem like this and you can’t wait to get that post written. This is one of those types. The talented young team working at Julian Murray Photography and Design from Las Vegas has some offbeat projects. (Tattoos & Tentacles from Julian Murray on Vimeo.) They work in primarily the music, advertising, and fashion industries. One of the projects they’ve been working on this past year and plan to continue expanding upon is called the Tattoos and Tentacles Series. Check out the video – gives you an idea of the photo shoots. It features heavily tattooed people posing with a sea creature with tentacles. It looks like an octopus. A fairly small one but gives me the creeps to think about them those rubbery suction cups clinging to skin. Many of the photos are of beautiful. There are many with barely clad sexy women with the tentacle arms draped strategically to keep a person from seeing quite everything. You just wonder how they can stand it. And the models probably have to work with this creature for quite some time before getting the shot the photographer is looking for. Ughhh….The photos are cool and books and posters will be coming this year. The series will be part of future tattoo conventions and gallery showing. You may have an opportunity to see them in person.

Tribal Designs

New book on the market targets popular tribal designs. The book is a good resource if you are planning on getting this style of tattoo or have an interest in this style. It was put together by well known artist Lora Irish. One of the features of the book is the offering of designs and elements that can be combined to create your own unique tribal design. It also has instructions and graph paper to help with the design creation.

The author also includes a variety of tattoo types including motifs, free form, and fine line henna designs. It’s already on sale at Amazon for about $10.00 – originally over $14.00. Used even cheaper. I am still anxious to buy the new scratchart book currently out by Guy Aitchison. I wonder if the prices on some of these tattoo books are so high to cover the expense of putting out a image heavy book to a fairly narrow chunk of the public that would potentially buy it. Even though tattoos are pretty main stream at the moment, I don’t see many fans investing in these books. It would probably people in the industry and hard core fans.

Scratch Art Book – Tattoo Artists

On a recent trip to Arizona, my hubby and I visited a tattoo shop in Jerome and this book was laying on the table for customers to flip through. It encompasses one of my favorite art mediums scratch board. Scratchboard art is when an artist takes a completely black surface – it is a panel covered in most times, india ink. The artist then uses various scratching tools to uncover the white beneath to produce the desired picture and affect they are striving for. This hardcover book was put together by Guy Aitchison amongst others. The artwork is all done by tattoo artists.

The book consists of the work of over 200 tattoo artists using various tools including tattoo needles to do the “scratching”. I’m not sure why but Amazon sells it new for $40.00 and sellers on Amazon are selling used versions for over $100.00.???

Text and Writing – Body Type – The Tattoo Book

Many tattoo fans find adding a name or some type of statement or proclamation to their bodies a popular choice. Words can inspire and be used as a constant reminder of a time or belief. This book of messages printed permanently on the subjects make for an interesting book and is sold in various places including Amazon – where you can also get a good deal on a used copy.

The book explores the ideas and emotions behind the choices people make.. From famous quotes from famous people – temporary and historic, declarations of love and devotion, to memorials, the book delves into the emotions and reasons behind the words. Volume II is expected out this year.

Fantasy Artist – Brian Froud

Since I was a teen – ages ago- I have been a fan of this guy’s fantasy artwork. I currently have one of his prints on my office wall – some wood nymphs and small gnome type creature. He has also been an artistic factor in movies such as the Labrinth and Jim Hensons’ the Dark Crystal. His artwork has an earthy, nautral feel to it. Nature abounds. New Design

I still have tweaking to do but the fundamentals work find. I have a site – Tattoo E-Book – and just did a complete redesign. The last being crowded and on the ugly side. So, today, is strictly, a shameless promotion of one of my own sites. If you have any comments, please leave one here. It’ll look better as the week goes on and I find the shortcomings. This is a reprinting of a 1933 book, Tattoo: Secrets of a Strange Art currently selling at Amazon -From what I’ve read on the evaluations of this book – if you are looking for lots of pictures of great body art – this isn’t it. One of the people who bought it “This is really a sociological and psychological screed on tattoos and tattooing, when it was a lot less commonplace, frowned upon etc. when tattooing was a real curio for the majority of mainstream society.” – The good old days – I think not.

Celebrity Tattoo Book

For some reason our society loves to hear about famous people’s personal lives – what they are up to, where they are living and shopping and now – we are curious about their body art. Our infatuation with celebritys and tattoos has led to a market and audience for books like this one. The combination of professional photography, attractive bodies, and quality tattoos make for a pleasing combination as well. Amazon is selling this interesting book. Stars can afford the best artists and the best bods so it’s a win win.
