Do They Stand a Chance?

The area I live in has a problem with meth addicts and alcohol related crimes. This story is a typical one for the week.

Police were called to investigate a small boy wondering a local neighborhood in the middle of the night, in the rain. The boy was six years old and autistic and was unable to communicate with the police. People in the area were able to help the cops locate the correct apartment. The grandfather, who was intoxicated, answered the door but denied responsibility. They then found a woman walking down the street, who was also – intoxicated, who claimed to be his stepmother. Then, to contradict that statement, she proved she was the kid’s mom by showing them a tattoo of the kid’s name she had on her neck. She was eventually arrested for child abuse. So she felt displaying her tattoo proved she was a mom. How ‘bout taking care of your special needs kid! Shit. Does this poor kid have any type of chance of surviving with parents and grandparents like this? Hell, no. Poor kid will be lucky to survive his childhood.

Angel Art

Body art can be used to describe tattoos as well as many other types of body art. Temporary but elaborate paintings are very popular and are often part of art shows here and in other countries. It’s becoming more respected as an art form. It’s just sad to think they are basically temporary art that will washed (more likely scrubbed) off the skin of these models. Similar to sandcastle art that is admired for such a short time and then lost forever when the tide comes in. It makes you appreciate the effort even more. At least we can appreciate the photos to remind us. I love the planning involved with adding the cherubs to the knee area.

Dreamt Up Tattoos

You may not have known his name but you’ll know the face. Liev Schreiber has starred in many roles in television and movies. One of his most recent and more popular roles was as Sabertooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. His background is very unusual. Once his parents divorced when he was 5 years old, him and his mom moved to New York City. She drove cab to support them but they lived in abandoned buildings. She never let him see color movies. Only the old black and white flicks. Anyway, he wasn’t into tattoos until recently when he had a vivid dream about a specific tattoo design. He dreamt he was in his senior years and his children were grown. He was driving and got a flat. While changing the flat, his sleeve rolls up and there is a tattoo of his childrens names on his arm. His kids were there and saw it and were thrilled. When he woke he thought it would be a great idea to show his love for them. He has experienced vivid dreams before that have been forceful enough to motivate him to act in his real life. He took up scuba diving to mimic the repeated dream he had of being able to fly. He felt that was fairly close to the wonderful sensation he experienced while having the dream.

I see a bright future for this artist. I have a couple imaging programs but find them so damn hard to learn. When I see someone accomplishing this level my mouth just hangs open. I can appreciate the work involved. Check out this video for a babysitting ad done by an art school student.

Tattoos and Tentacles

Some weeks it’s hard to find new and fresh topics to blog about – I think of it as Blogger’s block and then there are the weeks where you find a gem like this and you can’t wait to get that post written. This is one of those types. The talented young team working at Julian Murray Photography and Design from Las Vegas has some offbeat projects. (Tattoos & Tentacles from Julian Murray on Vimeo.) They work in primarily the music, advertising, and fashion industries. One of the projects they’ve been working on this past year and plan to continue expanding upon is called the Tattoos and Tentacles Series. Check out the video – gives you an idea of the photo shoots. It features heavily tattooed people posing with a sea creature with tentacles. It looks like an octopus. A fairly small one but gives me the creeps to think about them those rubbery suction cups clinging to skin. Many of the photos are of beautiful. There are many with barely clad sexy women with the tentacle arms draped strategically to keep a person from seeing quite everything. You just wonder how they can stand it. And the models probably have to work with this creature for quite some time before getting the shot the photographer is looking for. Ughhh….The photos are cool and books and posters will be coming this year. The series will be part of future tattoo conventions and gallery showing. You may have an opportunity to see them in person.

The Portraits of Ryan Hadley

You may not recognize the name but you are likely to recognize Ryan Hadley’s tattoo portraits which are often featured in tattoo magazines. In doing research on Ryan I discovered that he almost gave up on tattooing at one point. He started out self taught, working on friends that were willing to spare some skin. He said he was discouraged with his results and put down his tattoo machine for a couple of years with the intention of giving up. That would have been an awful waste of talent. Fortunately, he decided to give it another try, this time working in a real studio. He now is known for his portrait work, which is normally the toughest area to conquer. He is able to capture the likeness of his subjects in a way that makes the portrait seem to be more of a drawing or painting rather than a tattoo.

Looking at his work, you’d think there was no room for improvement, but Hadley says he is still tweaking his skills. A true artist is always striving for improving their technique and Ryan is no exception. Although to my eye, his portrait work is perfect.

John Lynch aka Prince Albert

John Lynch, also known as Prince “John” Albert”, is quite a unique character whose story is just as interesting as his visible appearance. He is known for having the most piercings of anyone in the UK where he resides. You may recognize him from tattoo and piercing sites, tattoo conventions, and magazines. I’ve seen his picture in the media but never thought much about the man behind the metal. Until I read an interesting interview with him.

He worked in the banking industry for over 30 years and didn’t start getting tattoos and piercings until after he left this long running career. He was married for over 20 years and has a daughter and two grandchildren. He eventually admitted he was gay and left his marriage. He went from a banking career to managing a gay porn book shop. You might say this was the turning point of John’s life as well as a major career change.

Now John is almost 80 years old and still loves his freakiness. He enjoys the people he meets who are curious about his appearance and he has no problem with people taking his picture. And as if his many piercings, facial tattoos and face paint weren’t enough to catch your eye, John is known for wearing mini-skirts. He also sports transdermal implant horns on his head.

John’s advice to young people is to never get tattoo or piercings that would interfere with their employment prospects. He followed his own advice and seems to have made up for lost time.

Almost Forgot Brandon

Well talk about feeling foolish. Talk about feeling like I’m losing it. I’ve never done a post about Brandon Bond. I’ve read about him. Respected his work. Admired his work. I’ve added his bio to my other sites , Best Tattoo Sites and Best Tattoo Artists, – but never a post in 2 years. Brandon Bond is without doubt, one of the best tattoo artists you will find in the industry. He also works out of All or Nothing Tattoo. He has made a name for himself not only for his exceptional tattoo work, but his dedication and work involving pit bull rescues. He believes not only in rescuing this mistreated and misunderstood breed, he’s also involved with rehabilitating them so they can eventually be placed in a loving home. He was a major player in finding homes for the abused dogs used by Michael Vick’s fighting group. He, personally, has adopted multiple rehabilitated pit bulls. All or Nothing rescue works closely with the Georgia SPCA www.georgiaspca.com and the two are working together to insure the safety and training of pit bulls.

Jace Masula Talented Artist

Jace Masula is still in the early years of his tattoo career. His professional life began as a software developer and graphic designer. He eventually got the calling to express his artistic and creative side by learning how to tattoo. He semi-forced his way into an apprenticeship and finished in eight months but his tattoo journey now began at the age of 31! But this lapse of years, this late start, did not slow his talent down in the least. Looking at his tattoo portfolio, you would think you are eyeing the work of a long term professional. He is currently working out one of the more famous tattoo shops in Atlanta. He keeps company with Brandon Bond at All of Nothing Tattoo. He says he loves to do color as much as he loves doing black and gray. Jace was recently featured in International Tattoo Magazine. Great artist.

Ink Not Mink

I recently became a member of PETA. I felt I had to do more than yap about animal abuse and how much it upset me. They make some amazing strides in keeping businesses and people accountable for how animals are treated. But the task seems gigantic so any help individuals can offer helps the cause. Recently, PETA has had impressive campaigns to promote the ethical treatment of animals including “Ink No Mink”. Celebrities are stripping out of their clothes and being tastefully photographed with a couple of accessories and in all their tattoo glory. A great idea for a campaign. A win win. Everyone loves tattoos and celebrities. Naked celebrities with tattoos. Whoever thought up the campaign should get a promotion! Visit their ad page to see more. And if you have a heart, make a donation or, better yet, join PETA and support their work. If you can’t afford to do that, write a letter. Voice your objection to some of the cruelty we subject animals to.
