Body art can be used to describe tattoos as well as many other types of body art. Temporary but elaborate paintings are very popular and are often part of art shows here and in other countries. It’s becoming more respected as an art form. It’s just sad to think they are basically temporary art that will washed (more likely scrubbed) off the skin of these models. Similar to sandcastle art that is admired for such a short time and then lost forever when the tide comes in. It makes you appreciate the effort even more. At least we can appreciate the photos to remind us. I love the planning involved with adding the cherubs to the knee area.

I see a bright future for this artist. I have a couple imaging programs but find them so damn hard to learn. When I see someone accomplishing this level my mouth just hangs open. I can appreciate the work involved. Check out this video for a babysitting ad done by an art school student.

Tattoos and Tentacles

Some weeks it’s hard to find new and fresh topics to blog about – I think of it as Blogger’s block and then there are the weeks where you find a gem like this and you can’t wait to get that post written. This is one of those types. The talented young team working at Julian Murray Photography and Design from Las Vegas has some offbeat projects. (Tattoos & Tentacles from Julian Murray on Vimeo.) They work in primarily the music, advertising, and fashion industries. One of the projects they’ve been working on this past year and plan to continue expanding upon is called the Tattoos and Tentacles Series. Check out the video – gives you an idea of the photo shoots. It features heavily tattooed people posing with a sea creature with tentacles. It looks like an octopus. A fairly small one but gives me the creeps to think about them those rubbery suction cups clinging to skin. Many of the photos are of beautiful. There are many with barely clad sexy women with the tentacle arms draped strategically to keep a person from seeing quite everything. You just wonder how they can stand it. And the models probably have to work with this creature for quite some time before getting the shot the photographer is looking for. Ughhh….The photos are cool and books and posters will be coming this year. The series will be part of future tattoo conventions and gallery showing. You may have an opportunity to see them in person.

So Good It Fooled Me

Recently I’ve had an itch to take some type of sculpting class – learn how to throw some clay – or bake a statue. What’s perked my interest in this art medium recently is the detailed work that some artists are able to achieve. It looks like it would be fun to take a stab at it – make you appreciate their skill and the realism they are able to reach can make you doubt what you are seeing.

Lisa Lichtenfels creates realistic soft sculptures. They range from less than 5 inches to life-sized figures. Her sculptures have been sold to collectors from all over the world.

The sculpture she has on her landing page is so real, I first thought it was the artist and she had a great sense of humor. I thought that even though I KNEW she was an artist that created life like sculptures. I just refused to believe it could be anything but an old lady dressed up for a funny photo shoot. (Yeah, I’m on the gullible side in case you’re wondering) Once venturing further into the site, I realized it was one of her many realistic sculptures. In addition to creating these life like aliens, fairies, humans, and gnomes, she photographs her creations with interesting backdrops and sells the prints.

The Portraits of Ryan Hadley

You may not recognize the name but you are likely to recognize Ryan Hadley’s tattoo portraits which are often featured in tattoo magazines. In doing research on Ryan I discovered that he almost gave up on tattooing at one point. He started out self taught, working on friends that were willing to spare some skin. He said he was discouraged with his results and put down his tattoo machine for a couple of years with the intention of giving up. That would have been an awful waste of talent. Fortunately, he decided to give it another try, this time working in a real studio. He now is known for his portrait work, which is normally the toughest area to conquer. He is able to capture the likeness of his subjects in a way that makes the portrait seem to be more of a drawing or painting rather than a tattoo.

Looking at his work, you’d think there was no room for improvement, but Hadley says he is still tweaking his skills. A true artist is always striving for improving their technique and Ryan is no exception. Although to my eye, his portrait work is perfect.

Almost Forgot Brandon

Well talk about feeling foolish. Talk about feeling like I’m losing it. I’ve never done a post about Brandon Bond. I’ve read about him. Respected his work. Admired his work. I’ve added his bio to my other sites , Best Tattoo Sites and Best Tattoo Artists, – but never a post in 2 years. Brandon Bond is without doubt, one of the best tattoo artists you will find in the industry. He also works out of All or Nothing Tattoo. He has made a name for himself not only for his exceptional tattoo work, but his dedication and work involving pit bull rescues. He believes not only in rescuing this mistreated and misunderstood breed, he’s also involved with rehabilitating them so they can eventually be placed in a loving home. He was a major player in finding homes for the abused dogs used by Michael Vick’s fighting group. He, personally, has adopted multiple rehabilitated pit bulls. All or Nothing rescue works closely with the Georgia SPCA www.georgiaspca.com and the two are working together to insure the safety and training of pit bulls.

Jace Masula Talented Artist

Jace Masula is still in the early years of his tattoo career. His professional life began as a software developer and graphic designer. He eventually got the calling to express his artistic and creative side by learning how to tattoo. He semi-forced his way into an apprenticeship and finished in eight months but his tattoo journey now began at the age of 31! But this lapse of years, this late start, did not slow his talent down in the least. Looking at his tattoo portfolio, you would think you are eyeing the work of a long term professional. He is currently working out one of the more famous tattoo shops in Atlanta. He keeps company with Brandon Bond at All of Nothing Tattoo. He says he loves to do color as much as he loves doing black and gray. Jace was recently featured in International Tattoo Magazine. Great artist.

Carson Hill Inventor

Carson Hill is an outstanding painter, renowned tattoo artist, photographer, scientist and inventor of a revolutionary tattoo machine. He has a rare combination of artistic talent in addition to a scientific brain. He has invented a tattoo machine called the Neuma that is very different from the ones that have been around for decades. It may be a challenge to convince established artists to try something so different from what their used to, but all you have to do is check out Carson Hill’s portfolio or that of Mike Devries who also prefers the Neuma over a traditional machine. Both artists are able to achieve very bright and strong colors in their body art. Is it the ink? A technique they have and could the machine be contributing to their quality body art? He’s now incorporated the business and recently is putting more time into promoting the Neuma. Wish him luck but I don’t think it’s needed. This looks like a winner.

Devries – Always Working on his Art

I’ve had other posts about Mike Devries and I’ll admit he is one of my favorite well known tattoo artists. I was just beefing up his page on my tattoo artist’s site, and discovered a resource for all the extra projects Devries is involved in. Reflected Art is the name and it only came about last year. The project is actually a partnership between Devries and John Pyles, also known as Terminator John. Terminator John is a passionate tattoo collector and the two of them brought together their different perspectives and their love of body art to offer a nice selection of related items. The items on the site are not just Devrie’s items. They are offering dvds, art books, prints, shirts, and other artistic products from talented individuals from the tattoo industry as well as artists outside of the industry. Devries has managed to take his fame and not only relish in the benefits of being a successful tattoo artist, but he is using his reputation to help other artists and promote the industry in a positive artistic vein. I have a lot of respect for him and his principled life style.

David Bollt Artist

I’ve been aware of this artist for some years and have admired his style and talent. I did a small post about him almost 2 years ago that was lacking “meat” and decided David needed more credit than I gave him in that post. Bollt is not only a respected tattoo artist, he has a large following of admirers of his fantasy work and is well known for his illustrative work for book covers, CD covers and magazine art work. When he was only in his early teens, he began his art career by freelancing. He designed cover work for local bands as well as science fiction magazines. After getting his Fine Arts degree and working in the field for awhile, he spent a year studying tattooing. He travels the tattoo convention circuit and you might be able to catch him with his traveling art gallery which hits about 20 cities a year. His site is going under a redesign which will hopefully better show examples of his work. What I’ve seen of his tattoo work I like very much but I think his strengths are in his illustrations. If you admire his work and style and you are looking for a fantasy piece for your next tattoo, a copy of one of his art pieces might be the perfect choice.
