Julian Murray has a quirky and unique artistic view. He specializes in fashion, music and the advertising business. He does everything from website design to creative concept photography. His client list includes Inked Magazine, Rebel Ink and Warner Brothers.

A while back I did a post about a project he was working on called Tattoos & Tentacles. The project is now completed!! and he’s selling posters as well as a coffee table book full of images of beautiful women posing with “clinging” octopi. It’s gross and yet beautiful at the same time. The sliminess just creeps me out. It would make a nice XMAS present for any tattoo fans on your list. The artwork and book are for sale on his site.

Yoga and Tattoos Go Well Together

For some who practice yoga, the idea of getting a tattoo is equivalent to desecrating the body. For others, they believe in the beauty and art of tattoos. In the casual dress that people wear while practicing yoga, there is an opportunity to see works of body art that may normally be covered up the majority of the time. This link takes you to a series of black and white photographs of people practicing their yoga poses while sporting some beautiful artwork in the process. The photography of these graceful poses would make a beautiful book.

Tattoos and Sailor Jerry Make History

It’s good to see that tattoo artists are getting the recognition they deserve.

Almost everyone has heard of Sailor Jerry. Maybe you don’t know his background but his name is well known. You may even think the name is just a label for a company that sells rum or tattoo inspired clothing. His name is used to promote these products. But he is truly one of the icons of the tattoo industry.

After getting out of the navy, Norman Collins, a.k.a. Sailor Jerry, opened up a very successful tattoo shop located in Hawaii. He became well known for his popular style and tattooing skills.

His flash and tattoos have a Patriotic – American style. Even now this style has endured and is still strongly popular today, decades after the man has passed on.

Now, the Center City’s Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts is going to preserve the works of Norman Collins (Sailor Jerry). His artwork will be restored and preserved and will be stored along with other famous artwork and historical documents.

The Center, located in Philadelphia, is going to reserve his flash art, drawings he had on tracing paper, and stencils he made on acetate.

This warms your heart to see that one of our legendary tattoo artists will be recognized for his exceptional skills. The best part of the story is the ending. One of the many talented conservators got so inspired by spending thousands of hours working on the documents, she went out and got a Sailor Jerry tattoo on her forearm. A sparrow and hearts with a banner that says “True Love”. Classic.

Babies and Tattoos

This is one of my favorite topics – babies and tattoos. Pennsylvania artist, Dietrich Wegner, also sees the attraction as he has begun a series of photos featuring little babies and infants covered with colorful fake tattoos mostly advertising big companies like Chevy and Better Homes and Garden magazine. Little, crawling live advertisements. I think they’d be much cuter covered some skulls and tribal work. That would make a great table book. Wegner has some interesting sculptures – you can check out his work on his site.

Shark Tattoo a Conversation Starter

Women have been doing this for years. After various types of breast surgery, women have found turned to their tattoo artist. Tattoo artists are even hired by surgeons to treat patient’s right in their office. After breast surgery – this includes augmentation, reduction, and reconstruction – tattoo artists can help enhance the area by tattooing realistic areola to the area. After surgery this area can become scarred, becomes distorted, and in some cases disappears.

Here we have an individual that is taking this to another level. This is one of the first amputee enhanced pieces of body art I’ve ever seen but I doubt if it’s that isolated an example. I like the idea for other reasons. It’s a great tattoo utilizing the shape of the body which is one of the reasons it’s a great tattoo. This area of the body is a perfect complement to the piece. The other thought that struck me was what a conversation starter. It takes away any awkwardness. If I saw this man sitting next to me on the beach, I’d have to make small talk and pay him some compliments on his ink. Instead of trying to “not look” at this man’s arm, this tattoo say it’s OK with him. He has no hang ups and neither should you. It would really be a trip if he lost his arm to a shark.

Paul Booth and the 13th Hour Exhibit

When I think of Halloween and tattoos, the first artist that comes to mind is Paul Booth. His tattoos, his shop, and every aspect of the art of Paul Booth screams Halloween. This year marks the third year that Last Rites Gallery, Booth’s shop, has celebrated it’s 13th Hour Group Exhibit. The exhibit began this weekend and will run until the 21st of November. He brings together artists specializing in the dark, depraved, and gothic style from around the world to exhibit their work. The studio and where you can visit this exhibition is located in New York city. Booth built up a highly respected reputation in the tattoo industry and is now using his fame to help bring these artists together and help establish an appreciation for dark art which gets a bad rap. These talent artists are given a chance to display their work as a serious art form. Gothic art is slowly building up a respectable reputation with the help of artist like Paul Booth. (Last Rites also holds additional exhibits throughout the year.)

Kelly Grows Up

Although I’m not into most reality TV shows, The Osbournes was one that I looked forward to every week. Watching Ozzy shuffling and mumbling though family life with Sharon and the kids every week was my idea of entertainment. His kids kept the show interesting and I can still recall when Kelly divulged her first tattoo to her parents.

Well, now Kelly has grown up and has transformed into a “sophisticated” adult who is now planning on removing all of her 15 tattoos. Tattoo removal cost is high no matter what method you choose but lasering off 15 tattoos would probably carry the price tag of a new car.

Kelly is now twenty five years old (and would you even recognize her from this photo)? Talk about a makeover. She recently lost 50 pounds, has appeared on dancing with the stars, and is getting some acting roles.

She say she still likes some of them – including a matching tattoo she got with sibling, Jack, but has regrets about others. None the less, they’re all getting the ax.

This post is short and sweet – I don’t know anything about this artist except he sent me a link to his site. His biography page reads like a job resume and nothing about his personal life. With the huge success of YouTube like videos, we are now seeing other ways video is now becoming a prominent tool in our entertainment and other aspects of our lives. So it’s no surprise we can now get instant gratification and access to a web site that offers webisodes of tattoo reality TV. I’ve only watched one episode so far but I’m giving it a thumbs up. Instead of having the same type of emotional drivel you sometimes find on other tattoo reality shows, this episode concentrated more on the shop, the artists, and that tattoo work. So far there are only 5 webisodes available for viewing but things must be going well because they are promoting a full fall season.

The Panda Dog

It was crazy enough when the trend was to paint your cat but now things are way over the top. A newest rage is catching on in China – colorizing or dying and basically, giving the dog a makeover. It’s already caught on in Korea and Japan. I’m not talking just a makeover – they actually try to alter and change the dog’s entire appearance. The spas cater to wealthy Chinese who have more money than they know what to do with and no common sense.Pet ownership is high in China and businesses that promote pampering those pets are thriving in that country. Pet spas are popular and offer services such things as pedicures, dog massages, and rose petal bubble baths.

They trim the hair to help imitate whatever animal they’re trying to emulate. For the panda look, some of the fur was cut and some of the hair was bunched up in elastic bands to create the short rounded ears of a panda.

The owners say getting these treatments helps with their animals self confidence. They get so much attention when they’re out in public, everyone “ohs” and “ahs” over them. It seems to me that it’s bolstering the owner’s ego. I haven’t heard of the similar business of painting cats ever caught on. The book was out years ago.

Veterinarians warn that the dyes may be harmful to their skin and the whole charade may actually be hurting the dog’s mental well-being. Do something more worthwhile with that cash. Help the homeless and leave the dogs alone.
