Pepa Heller Tattoo Artist

Papa Heller is not a new comer to tattoos but he is not very well known in the United States. He hails from the Czech Republic but has been a tattoo artist practicing his trade in New Zealand for over ten years now. He’s also lived in the UK and has traveled to Australia and the Middle East. There was an extensive and thorough interview with him in my latest issue of International Tattoo Art. He studied under an American who owned a shop in Prague. He says he’s been shooting for more realism and says he’s relying more on references to help with achieving this. He’s also been trying to incorporate more color into his work. He has a way of using his backgrounds – whether it’s a drop shadow or a blue sky to cause his artwork to jump off the skin. I really like the way the tail end of this shark looks like it’s coming around the corner of the guy’s torso. You can see much more of his work by visiting his Myspace page.

So Good It Fooled Me

Recently I’ve had an itch to take some type of sculpting class – learn how to throw some clay – or bake a statue. What’s perked my interest in this art medium recently is the detailed work that some artists are able to achieve. It looks like it would be fun to take a stab at it – make you appreciate their skill and the realism they are able to reach can make you doubt what you are seeing.

Lisa Lichtenfels creates realistic soft sculptures. They range from less than 5 inches to life-sized figures. Her sculptures have been sold to collectors from all over the world.

The sculpture she has on her landing page is so real, I first thought it was the artist and she had a great sense of humor. I thought that even though I KNEW she was an artist that created life like sculptures. I just refused to believe it could be anything but an old lady dressed up for a funny photo shoot. (Yeah, I’m on the gullible side in case you’re wondering) Once venturing further into the site, I realized it was one of her many realistic sculptures. In addition to creating these life like aliens, fairies, humans, and gnomes, she photographs her creations with interesting backdrops and sells the prints.

The Portraits of Ryan Hadley

You may not recognize the name but you are likely to recognize Ryan Hadley’s tattoo portraits which are often featured in tattoo magazines. In doing research on Ryan I discovered that he almost gave up on tattooing at one point. He started out self taught, working on friends that were willing to spare some skin. He said he was discouraged with his results and put down his tattoo machine for a couple of years with the intention of giving up. That would have been an awful waste of talent. Fortunately, he decided to give it another try, this time working in a real studio. He now is known for his portrait work, which is normally the toughest area to conquer. He is able to capture the likeness of his subjects in a way that makes the portrait seem to be more of a drawing or painting rather than a tattoo.

Looking at his work, you’d think there was no room for improvement, but Hadley says he is still tweaking his skills. A true artist is always striving for improving their technique and Ryan is no exception. Although to my eye, his portrait work is perfect.

Jace Masula Talented Artist

Jace Masula is still in the early years of his tattoo career. His professional life began as a software developer and graphic designer. He eventually got the calling to express his artistic and creative side by learning how to tattoo. He semi-forced his way into an apprenticeship and finished in eight months but his tattoo journey now began at the age of 31! But this lapse of years, this late start, did not slow his talent down in the least. Looking at his tattoo portfolio, you would think you are eyeing the work of a long term professional. He is currently working out one of the more famous tattoo shops in Atlanta. He keeps company with Brandon Bond at All of Nothing Tattoo. He says he loves to do color as much as he loves doing black and gray. Jace was recently featured in International Tattoo Magazine. Great artist.

Carson Hill Inventor

Carson Hill is an outstanding painter, renowned tattoo artist, photographer, scientist and inventor of a revolutionary tattoo machine. He has a rare combination of artistic talent in addition to a scientific brain. He has invented a tattoo machine called the Neuma that is very different from the ones that have been around for decades. It may be a challenge to convince established artists to try something so different from what their used to, but all you have to do is check out Carson Hill’s portfolio or that of Mike Devries who also prefers the Neuma over a traditional machine. Both artists are able to achieve very bright and strong colors in their body art. Is it the ink? A technique they have and could the machine be contributing to their quality body art? He’s now incorporated the business and recently is putting more time into promoting the Neuma. Wish him luck but I don’t think it’s needed. This looks like a winner.

Talented Tattoo Artist

Damien Rodriguez is a young tattoo artist hailing from Philly but currently working in New York City at Superstition Tattoo. Most of Damien’s earlier artwork was related to graffiti but he says tattoos were always in the background. He attended multiple shows even before he was old enough to get a tattoo. Even then the art was calling out to him.By the time he was only 17 he had decided being a tattoo artist was for him. His current passion is the Japanese style influence. Damien shows a strong character struggling through an old fashioned, hard core apprenticeship which at times found him homeless. The dude survived and is thankful for the success he is now enjoying. His highlights and shading produce a realistic jump off the skin effect. Visit his myspace page to see more of his work.

Female Tattoo Artist

I stumbled upon this female tattoo artist via a small example in a tattoo magazine. But that was enough for me to look for her work in ernest. Traci Hancock started her career in graphic design and that soon developed into the tattoo trade. She started out doing tattoo parties in Virginia, West Virginia, D.C., PA and New York. These days, she owns her own shop Boomtown Tattoo located in West Virginia. If you do a search in Google images under her name you will see some great examples such as this piece. The color is vivid and has that wonderful 3d coming off the skin effect. I am definately a fan now!

Miniature Tat

I thought this was a great choice for a miniature ear tattoo. Using the shape of the ear to enhance the shape of the skull. Very detailed. I also like the shading that was added to accent the concave of the ear itself. Previously, I had only seen feminine ear tats – flowers, tribal stuff. I think ear body art will become more popular in the future. It’s discreet and if you have long enough hair, can be covered if you prefer that in some social situations.

Miniature Tats

Anil Gupta is one of the best tattoo artists in the U.S., known for his miniature fine art reproductions. Look at the detail in this Mona Lisa tattoo. Hard to believe. This may not be a style that most people will be interested in. Many folks want to show off their body art. But then again, you could fit one of these babies in many different body parts and crevices! -Visit his site to see more example of Anil’s talent. He’s the only artist that I know of that specializes in this area of tattooing. Miniature tattoos are a challenge in themselves. Capturing minute detail on skin.

Female Tattoo Artist – Joy Rumore

Joy Rumore is a young talented artist that at the very young age of 28 opened her own shop – Twelve 28 Tattoo, named after her birthday. I read an interview by her and it was surprising to hear about the issues a female tattoo artist runs into from male as well as female artists.
