Well it’s just going to be one of those weeks – found another talented dark doll artist by the name of Kamila Mlynarczyk. Each doll is one of a kind and completely hand made. Her styles are Victorian and antique in style. The dolls are fascinating and so odd. Her sculptures range from mermaids and zombies to conjoined twins. It’s difficult to discern the size of some of her dolls. A lack of detailed description sometimes makes it impossible to tell. In some of the settings you see a human hand so you’re able to judge the size based on comparison and the dolls are surprisingly tiny. They are not for the weak hearted – some have bleeding stumps where limbs have been chopped off. More than just your average goth style dolls.

I’m excited – found a brand new goth doll artist that has a unique and wonderful VERY dark style. And the reasons for getting into the craft touched my heart. After rescuing a puppy born with several birth defects, macabre artist D. L. Marian, began making dolls to enable her to work at home with her pup by her side. She creates one of a kind gothic horror dolls and mannequins. Some of her doll categories include ghost dolls, vampire dolls and strange babies. Some of them are borderline disturbing but I guess you can just equate that to flattery to the artist. She even has a payment plan option to make them easier to afford but her prices seem extremely reasonable to start with. This may be an offer I cannot refuse.

The recent HUGE popularity surge of vampires and all aspects of their world has led to more of an interest in all things vampire. The Twilight popularity has led to a surge in the young teen age group. Kind of a young version of the Anne Rice vampire series. Books, movies, and TV shows – love that True Blood – and we now have clothing and jewelry. They were recently mentioned in a big tattoo magazine – Rebel Ink– and yes, they even have blood vial jewelry. They carry everything you need from head to toe – the shoes, jewelry, fangs, handbags, vampire bite tattoos, and even a cute tee for your little dog.

Maybe it’s the squeeze everyone is feeling these days, but I’ve just read about a second example of two small businesses combing into one business establishment. I admit – the first was in a book I was reading. The union brought on by friendship and a need for a job by all three friends. One third of an old house a book store, one third an art gallery, and one third a retro beauty shop. Then I read a similar story but it’s non-fiction and it was a marriage of a beauty shop and a tattoo parlor located in Brooklyn called Glamour Garage. The person responsible is Rebecca Faye the owner of Hello Beautiful Hair Salon. She loves tattoos and sports quite a few in addition to her sexy staff. Rebecca feels the two worlds are similar – each is used as a way to sport your individuality. Letting your freak flag fly if you will. Outstanding idea. I would guess that people that may have been hesitating before making the big move to WALK into a real tattoo parlor will find this type of transition easier.

Kat Von D for a Year

Although I’m a bit late with this bit of news – my thinking is that if you are into Kat Von D, you probably aren’t even looking to her calendar to see what the date is. I discovered that she had one for sale available on her site. Another piece of good news – it’s on sale for just over $10.00. All pics of Kat. None of her working on people or the tattoo work she’s done. Just sexy Kat Von D. She photographs like a model and the pics are flattering – shocker – and the photos lean towards the dark side with skull and other good props.

Sunshine State

The sunshine state – Florida – lawmakers are currently considering passing a new bill that would require tattoo artists practicing their trade in the state to attend classes on good hygiene and blood diseases. A good idea. Reading the article you’d think Florida had almost no regulations on their tattoo industry. The new fill would also ban kids younger than 16-years-old from getting a tattoo. It would still allow 17 and 18 year olds to get tattoos but only with their parents’ consent. The laws will still be one of the more liberal set of laws by most state’s standards. Very rarely do you see that kids under 18 years of age are able to get a tattoo with or without their parents permissions. I believe in less goverment intervention in our lives but considering how niave the public can be when it comes to the consequences of getting a tattoo where equipment isn’t sterilized correctly or bad practices could lead to a fatal blood disease, regulations should be in place.

Score One for the Good Guys

Bad guys better watch your step – and think twice about getting a tattoo of your name – or other distinct body art if you plan to break the law. Your body art may be your downfall.
Michigan State University researchers developed the technology. It enables them to easily identify suspects based on a new tattoo-matching program.

Tattoo ID is what the technology is called. Police agencies and related groups of the law enforcement variety are very interested in this tool that should help them do their job. 36% of people from 18-25 and 40 percent of those 26-40 sport some type of body art and the percentages are growing all the time. This percentage goes up if you’re talking about gang members and other assorted bad guys and riff raff.

Michigan University is working with the Michigan police and their database of tattoos to fine tune the system and improve it’s matching capability.

If a witness or a camera catches a glimpse of a tattoo it may help the cops identify and find the bad guy or come up with a list of possible suspects. This story reminds me of another where a man was caught because of the tattoo of his nickname he had sprawled across his knuckles. The guy he beat with those knuckles noticed – duh – and made it easy to track “Caveman” down.

Dennis – We’ll Miss Ya

Maybe this is a bit of reach to the topic of tattoos, but I just had to say I’m a big fan of Easy Rider and especially a fan of the movie star Dennis Hopper. Easy Rider = Bikers + Tattoos?…I just found out that although it’s been kept fairly quiet, Dennis Hopper is currently facing his last days. He is now in a hospital facing his last days with prostate cancer. Great actor and he gave some amazing performances in movies like Speed, Blue Velvet just to name a few. I’ve always admired his dignitytalent, and classy style. Unfortunately, it sounds like his last days are not necessarily a peaceful time for poor Dennis. He’s married to a money hungry, selfish woman who is outraged that she is only getting a portion of the estate that was established in their prenuptial agreement. The situation is so bad, that Dennis filed paper work in just the past week, from his death bed, to divorce the woman. How wrong that this poor guy has to deal with the stress and drama this bitch seems to be inflicting on his death bed. He probably won’t get peace in his life until his life is over. I’ll be sorry to see him leave this world.

Here Comes Super Snake

I was thinking of moving to the Florida area in a couple of years but I’m weighing the pros and cons. The super snake that is becoming a concern in the Everglades has me thinking even more. State environmental officials have a concern about the strong population of Burmese pythons. So the state conducted a 3 day hunt for these snakes and they ended up catching 5 African rock pythons including a 14 foot long female python. That alone would scare the poop out of me but – there’s more. The big worry for state officials is that these two pythons will breed which could lead to a “super snake” cross species. The Burmese python is mean and nasty and has been known to eat small children. It happened in Africa but you get the picture. There are 1000’s of these snakes in Florida – people lost their exotic pets or set them free, got loose in a hurricane – all sorts of reasons and without a natural predator the snakes are thriving. Sounds like a horror movie to me.

Tom Renshaw Amazing Realism

It almost seems like Tom Renshaw has made a pact with the devil. How else can a tattoo artist create such realism? I don’t think anyone can touch Renshaw when it comes to the photo realism category of tattoos. His ability holds true whether his subject is an animal or human. They say many of his clients are fellow tattoo artists. That’s probably because they can appreciate his talent even more than an average ink collector. In this piece he’s able to capture the likeness of Marley, the creases and texture of the denim in his jeans and even the background area can be appreciated for it’s quality. His site and his myspace page have lots of pictures of his work. A few years back he completely stopped using color and now only works on photo realism pieces and only in black and gray. Hands down he is my favorite artist. I can appreciate the styles others have but to achieve photo realism do the degree that this man does with needle and ink seems magical to me.
