Jess Yen is an award winning artist on both the international and national level. He is well known for his realistic portraits and elaborate and intricate body suits. He is equally famous for his black and grey as much as he is for his color work. He is recognized as a master of New School Oriental art style. Jess was raised in Taiwan but is currently living in the U.S. He’s been tattooing for over 16 years and is currently so in demand that he is booking 2 years in advance. He draws from his background in Japanese and Chinese cultures as inspiration for his designs. Jess is unlike most artists as he’s able to offer hand-poked tattooing (Tebori) as well as traditional electric machine tattooing. Jess is the owner of My Tattoo located in southern California and all of the artists working in his shop are able to tattoo with both electric machines as well as using Tebori style .

Goth Tattoo Artist Doll

Found a new goth doll blog site – NewAged Dolls. I actually feel this doll maker may have gone a little past goth and into a Stephen King novel. The kicker was it was a commissioned order filled by this talented Canadian artist, Jade Perez, which is adorned with a tattoo on it’s chest as well as a tattoo gun clutched in it’s little doll hand. Jade says “I love horror, blood and scary things.”… The doll was a gift to the buyer’s tattoo artist. She has the blog which is pretty attractive, well put together, and a way to see some of her work which includes some jewelry too – of course the designs are similar to the dolls. Looks like she recently held a contest to win a doll so there’s reason right there to check it out. Marine Policy on Marine Tattoo Policy

The Marines are looking for a few good men – minus the tattoos. Not only has this military branch laid out strict guidelines for interested future marines and soldiers currently serving, they also feel their guidelines will help with any future career plans a marine might pursue once he’s out of the marines. Their view is excessive tattoos detract from the professional appearance that people expect of a Marine. Although the Marines have had a fairly strict policy in place, Sgt. Maj. Carlton W. Kent stated that they realized more guidance was necessary to clear up questions about the existing policy. Sounds a bit bureaucratic. The policies are not only for their current employment in the Marines but also to help mold them for any future career they may strive for in the Marines or once they leave the service. To the Marine’s credit they seem to be looking out for the good of the enlisted men but I think they are placing too much emphasis on appearance and are showing an antiquated opinion on tattoos in general. At a time when tattoos are crossing mainstream and being appreciated as an art form, the Marines Corp is advising young men that tattoos will impact future careers in a negative way. Some of their policies I “get” – It prohibits sexist, racist, eccentric, vulgar or otherwise offensive tattoos. I really wouldn’t want to have racist assholes in our military or any government position. But once again I think the military is showing it’s outdated and remains out of touch with young adults.

Some highlights of the policy: The latest and greatest Marine policy prohibits tattoos on the head, neck, hands, fingers and wrists. It also prohibits full, half and quarter sleeves visible in the standard physical training uniform.
Marines with grandfathered sleeves have no restrictions for reenlistment or promotion. However, they are no longer eligible for any enlisted-to-officer program, recruiting duty or Marine Security Guard duty.

Lets Help Kate

I really wrote about an icon in the tattoo industry, Shanghi Kate, also known as the grandmother of tattoos. She is a talented and respected tattoo sixty six year old artist that recently had a bad fall resulting in a shattered leg. She has been tattooing since 1971 and has tattooed celebrities such as Howard Stern, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Jackdaw, David LaChapelle, Casey Affleck, during her career. I just wanted to bring some attention to the fund raiser started to help Kate pay her crazy expensive health bills. If you go to Kate’s MySpace page, or to a site recently erected solely for the purpose of helping Kate out with this unplanned expense. Kate has lived as many tattoo artists do, living on the commission she earns through her craft. If she can’t work she can’t make money. If you want to give back to the tattoo community helping Kate would be a great way to show your love.

Tattoos and the Olympics

Tattoos are truly becoming accepted in all walks of society. My hubby and I are chilling, watching the Vancouver Olympic women’s bobsled competition. The announcers like to fill you in on cute and interesting personal stories about whoever is competing at the time. Canadian bobsled driver, Kaillie Humphries, was only twelve years old when she posed a challenge to her family. If she ever made it on an Olympic team, her family had to get matching tattoos. Even at that young age Kaillie was jonesing for some skin art. Her family, never thinking this would materialize, agreed to get maple leaf tattoos if she reached her goal. When Kaillie qualified for the World Cup bobsled five years later, her family held up their end of the bargain. Her mother Cheryl, father Ray and sisters Shelby and Jordan went to the tattoo parlor and got their matching tattoos. These days her mom Cheryl Sigmundson has an angel tattoo on her ankle, her father Ray has an armband and her sister Jordan has a butterfly on her lower back. The youngest of the Humphries clan, Shelby, was too young for a tattoo, but had her belly button pierced.

Tattoo Artist Chris Garcia

Don’t you hate it when someone is not only lucky to have one talent but these lucky ones have 2 or more talents that the rest of us regular folk drool and envy over. Chris Garcia is one of those people. Not only has the man proven himself as a talented tattoo artist, his original career was spent working on the space program for NASA. His life began in the Philippines were his pursuit of an apprenticeship ended in failure – but as fate would have it – his family eventually landed in Virginia. Chris’s tattooing career began in earnest. You can see from these two examples of his work, that Chris has a knack for realism and portrait work – probably the most difficult of styles. The ironic and sad thing is Garcia has a heart condition that prevents him from being tattooed. But before being diagnosed, he and his four brothers got a memorial tattoo for their Mom. Toddler Gets Tattoo

Have you ever heard of the opinion that people should not be allowed to have children unless they were prequalified? Pass some type of “common sense” test that could determine if you have the brain capacity to care for another human life without fucking it up. Now we can expand on that to testing the friends of the potential parent. A twenty year old Louisville man by the name of Lee M. Derrick decided it was a great idea to place a tattoo on the rear end of a poor one year old kid that was visiting his home. Authorities have charged Derrick with a felony child endangering charge which means he is facing up to five years in the big house. I can almost guarantee he won’t get jail time but maybe this will illustrate to other morons out there that tattooing a toddler is not the best idea. The girls’ sixteen year old Aunt was present but I is not being charged. The police said that the mother did not grant permission for the tattoo and wasn’t present at the time. Deitrick was taken to the Stark County Jail under a probation hold.

Happy Valentines Day – should land on a Sunday every year. Give us a chance to spend with your loved one. Valentines Day also reminds us of the ever popular heart tattoo. All styles and shapes can be found with the heart shaped symbol. In the past handful of years, a gruesome and realistic version of the heart has grown in popularity even adorning the female population. I don’t understand the appeal but tastes run in all directions…The majority of the time it is chosen to represent a current and hopefully life long relationship (and if not find a good cover up artist). Other times it is chosen to remind a person of a broken relationship – a broken heart or a knife through the heart. Seems like placing that permanently on your body is a sign of a masochist….Another common reasons is as a memorial to a loved one that’s passed on. Whatever your reason, whatever your choice of designs – the choice of a heart tattoo almost always has a emotional reason behind it.

Talented Artist Taylor Cort

Even though Taylor Cort has been a tattoo artist for less than 5 years you could never tell that from the high quality work he punches out His work is detailed and his shop is known for it’s custom work with almost no flash adorning the walls. Now that he has opened up his shop, Mutiny Tattoo (located in Asheville North Carolina), he is now focusing his artwork on publishing books of his drawings. The man lives and breathes art. His first book is published and available on his Myspace page and he says he’s already working on the next 2 art books. His portrait work is top notch as well as his color work. Surprisingly, his appointment book is not full for months to come. According to a recent article interview in Rebel Ink, Taylor can usually get a person in within a week. More Evil Babies

Well it’s just going to be one of those weeks – found another talented dark doll artist by the name of Kamila Mlynarczyk. Each doll is one of a kind and completely hand made. Her styles are Victorian and antique in style. The dolls are fascinating and so odd. Her sculptures range from mermaids and zombies to conjoined twins. It’s difficult to discern the size of some of her dolls. A lack of detailed description sometimes makes it impossible to tell. In some of the settings you see a human hand so you’re able to judge the size based on comparison and the dolls are surprisingly tiny. They are not for the weak hearted – some have bleeding stumps where limbs have been chopped off. More than just your average goth style dolls.
